Book Review: Strong and Kind

Title: Strong and Kind, And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed

Authors: Korie Robertson with Chrys Howard, with Stories and Wisdom from Willie Robertson

Published: 2015

Pages: 205

I was cruising the Amazon website last week and came across this book.  I wanted to order it, but I found that my library had it also.  So I put it on hold and then picked the book up on Friday.  I'm so glad I did!

Parenting books don't always make the most enjoyable read.  For moms they sometimes make us feel even more guilty about the things we're doing or not doing.  But not this book.  I'm a big fan of the show Duck Dynasty, and I have truly come to love the Robertson family over the years.  They are inspiring, grounded, and entertaining.  This book really resonated with me.  I felt like I was sitting down having coffee with Korie as I spent most of the weekend reading it.

Towards the beginning of the book she suggests that you choose two main character traits that you want for your children.  She goes on to list various ones such as loyalty, honesty, patience, sincerity and many more.  Some of the character traits are then described in detail.  At the end of the book she asks you to make a plan, write it down, and live it out.

One of my favorite parts of the book was in the chapter titled Make Sure You Run the Show.  Korie was describing her grandparents and wrote...

"They were children during the Great Depression and World War II.  Children raised during such times didn't have the luxury of being the center of anyone's world.  This may be one secret to their greatness."

I loved this chapter because so many times we sort of joke around that the four of us live in Lance Land.  I know that he has his difficulties and challenges, but there are three other people in our family unit!

This book just seemed to be the parenting shot in the arm that I needed to give me a boost, help me be more confident, and give me just the encouragement I really needed.  I hope you all are able to check it out!

  1. I firmly believe that my children should not be the centre of the universe so this sounds like a good book for me to read. And given who Lance is, I can see why sometimes you all are living in Lance Land -- that makes sense. I am praying for you as you balance his needs with the rest of yours.
